1976 Shell Lake - Lund 315 - Guide
Series - Fiberglass, Tri-Hull Boat
The Trade of a
Lifetime
I recently traded my 16FT Leisure-Time
Canoe for a 1976 Shell Lake - Lund 315 Fiberglass Tri-Hull boat.
This webpage documents the restoration project of this rare little
vintage boat.
This is a photo of the boat in
all of it's original splendor in the garage of the fellow I traded with.
Bad news for him and good luck for me. I see
potential here beneath all of the AstroTurf, dirt and oxidation.
There's definitely a kick-ass fishing boat under all that dirt and
grime!
It seems that the wife
of the fellow I traded with wanted to get the “eyesore” out of the
garage. That's a 1989 Johnson 25 HP Outboard and it runs GREAT!
Step 1 - I replaced all of that old, ugly worn out green Astroturf
stuff with a nice gray marine quality carpet. In order to do this I
had to remove the old carpet and carpet glue. After a proper
scraping and cleaning I installed the new carpet. I then cleaned,
lubricated and re-installed the captain's chairs.
Step 2 - I removed the old
Astroturf from the casting platform as before and glued some modern
marine carpet in it's place. I still need to install some T-Molding to
cover the exposed staples.
Step 3 -
I installed some fishing pole hangers and a hanger for my net. I
hope to be using that net soon!
Step
4 - Here's where "El Capitan"
sits, a nice new cushy, padded seat at the rear of the bus.
Step 5 -
Here's my "ghetto custom" bow rail. It will do nicely until I can
source the fittings to build a real one. This one is strong and
functional and what the heck, I built it from crap laying around my
yard.
Step
6 - The hull shined up pretty
well so far. I used bathroom soap scum cleaner to remove the oxidation
and the black stains. I still need to polish the gel coat to a hi gloss.
Also, check it out! The lights are now working!
Step 7 -
I hooked up my Eagle locator and installed the sensor on the stern.
Hopefully I can figure this thing out better than my Blackberry!
